MY Story

I am an early retiree, who discovered internet auctions about 10 years ago. My interest with Oriental export items, started with a nice old porcelain vase bought at a flea-market. While trying to figure out what it was (50's- Chinese) and what it was worth (not much), I got hooked on Oriental vintage items, especially ceramics and cloisonne from China, then Japan, as many other 'recent internet collectors'.

I also studied the other Oriental export items, including lacquer, carvings, paintings, bronzes, jewelry and textiles. I have bought, sold and collected many cloisonne pieces in the last decade, as well as other types of Oriental exports, many reference books were acquired to supplement my knowledge.

japan1850to1900/upmydec09charger1.jpg      My intent is to help all those people that own, sell, collect or buy cloisonne, and do not know a lot about it. I found when I started collecting cloisonne there was little information online, so I finally decided to create this website in early 2009. It is a labor of love, since I never tire of this subject. With time, I have realised how vast this topic is and how little I know. So it is with humility that I share this information. I will do my utmost to be accurate, edit my statements very carefully, and continue to update the site. Striving to improve what I have already set-up, and reflect the latest Oriental cloisonne information available.

After experimenting with various topics, I find that the most satisfying for me is the research and studies. Focusing on the art of cloisonne, how it evolved, the differences between China and Japan. Providing cloisonne groupings of images together, to demonstrate and document my points is exciting. See my 'study' page for the latest.

As all this site's in depth information and research is free and unencumbered with advertising or any other type of financial benefit, unlike many other sites that dabble in the identification of antiques, I have decided to charge a small fee for personal inquiries. I'm not mercenary in nature, but if I help a cloisonne owner in a transaction that will net him thousands of dollars, I feel I am undervaluing myself, my contribution and my knowledge. If this site was in a reference book form, people would not hesitate to spend at least $50. for it's contents, and that information would not be updated or improved over time. So, the site will still be free. But if you chose to inquire for personal cloisonne identification purposes, then it is fair that my additional time be compensated in a small manner with $5.50US.

The specific circumstance that moved me towards this decision was an evaluation that netted the owner $30,000. at auction in England. He was very excited and elated when he gave me the news by email the following month, but did not feel compelled to make any kind of donation for the ongoing maintenance of this site, this after he received my help for free.
